MBExC member Prof. Dr. Timo Betz and his team received the “Science and Education” Award of the “Innovationspreis 2022” of the Landkreis Göttingen for their project about artificial muscles from the laboratory.
The project target is to grow functional muscle tissue from cells (from patients) on thin glass. This enables the scientists to perform high-resolution microscopy and at the same time precise force measurements on the tissue. For the first time, it is possible to watch live muscle development and disease at the subcellular level, understand processes and develop therapeutics without animal testing. Heart muscle, skeletal muscle and infarct tissue has already been successfully grown in the innovative platform.
