Ceremonial Opening of the Heart & Brain Center Göttingen

Ceremonial opening of the new Heart & Brain Center Göttingen (HBCG) of the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) on 22 August 2024. The federal government and the state of Lower Saxony are investing around 38 million euros in the new building. Research groups work in an interdisciplinary manner on cutting-edge basic medical research into the cardiovascular and nervous systems.
 
Prof. Dr Gerd Hasenfuß, spokesperson of the HBCG, Chairman of the Heart Research Centre Göttingen, Chairman of the Heart Centre, MBExC member and Director of the Clinic for Cardiology and Pneumology at the UMG, said: ‘We know that many heart and brain diseases can only be understood, diagnosed and treated through interdisciplinary research. With the Heart & Brain Center, we are creating an unique research environment and ideal conditions for interdisciplinary collaboration. Only by looking at both organs together we will be able to gain new insights and offer our patients the best individual treatment in the future.’
 
Prof. Dr Mathias Bähr, spokesperson of the HBCG, MBExC member and Director of the Department of Neurology at the UMG, explained: ‘At the HBCG, we are developing state-of-the-art methods and interdisciplinary expertise in a central location to study the interactions between the cardiovascular system and the brain and vice versa. Our aim is to establish new diagnostic methods for the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases and to test new therapeutic approaches’.
