Leading others is a privilege and an art that can be learned and mastered. Typical challenges that young leaders in academia face (among others) are: communicating clearly with different people while taking into account their diverse backgrounds and personalities, delegating tasks in such a way that it creates excellent results, fostering team members’ motivation and trust and giving critical feedback in a constructive fashion.
In order to navigate these challenges leaders not only need theoretical knowledge about leadership models, they first must raise their own awareness of their habitual ways of thinking, feeling and acting. They must also learn to see beyond common/surface stereotypes, and instead be able to focus on the underlying interests of individual team members. By doing so, they will be able to create an atmosphere in which each team member feels welcome and included.
