HSC Methods Course “Bioluminescence Imaging”

In this course, cellular bioluminescence labeling and imaging will be performed. Several luciferases will be expressed in both bacterial and mammalian cells and bioluminescence emission upon luciferin addition will be measured. Various imaging systems (a cell phone camera, a CCD-camera based imager, a microplate reader and a bioluminescence microscope) will be compared and applied for imaging of biological samples on different length scales, ranging from entire culture plates down to single cells. Factors affecting image quality will be investigated and discussed.
