Event Details

Consciously experiencing the senses

The five important senses of hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting and touching are how we perceive our surroundings every day. We experience the chirping of birds, the taste of our favorite ice cream, the scent of a rose and the beauty of a rainbow through these senses. They also warn us of potential dangers, such as smoke from a fire, the sound of an alarm, or the taste or smell of something inedible.

To celebrate the ‘Day of the Senses’, the Collaborative Research Center 1690 ‘Disease Mechanisms and Functional Restoration of Sensory and Motor Systems’, the Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Optogenetic Therapies (EKFZ OT), and the Cluster of Excellence ‘Multiscale Bioimaging’ (MBExC) of the University Medical Center Göttingen with the support of the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences, the German Primate Center and the University of Göttingen are inviting all interested children and adults to the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences, City Campus (Hermann-Rein-Str. 3) on Sunday, 27 September 2026 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

So, how do our eyes and sense of smell work? How are different sounds produced? What happens when our senses begin to decline? You can find the answers to these questions, as well as background information and interesting facts, by taking part in playful experiments under the guidance of scientists from Göttingen. An extensive sensory course offers children (aged 3 and over), teenagers, and adults a variety of hands-on experiments and demonstrations. Through experimenting with images, sound, scents and flavours, as well as touch boxes, participants can explore their own perceptions and sharpen their senses. Children receive a ‘Sensory Explorer Pass’ afterwards. Adults can learn more about how the senses work in lectures.

Registration is not required. Admission is free. Free parking is available in front of the main entrance of the MPI-NAT City Campus, Hermann-Rein-Str. 3.
