MBExC member Dr. Thomas Frank has received €360,000 in project funding over three years from the Schram Foundation. His project “Cellular mechanisms and brain-wide circuits of chemosensory valence coding” uses zebrafish as a model organism to investigate how the brain processes sensory information, such as odors, across different levels of organization, from synapses to complex brain-wide nerve cell networks. The findings may help to improve the understanding, and ultimately, the treatment of disorders such as parosmia, in which the brain misinterprets odors. The Schram Foundation has been promoting science and research in the fields of medicine and neuroscience, particularly brain research, since 2004.
