The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) will support research at the Institute for X-ray Physics at the University of Göttingen with a total of around one million euros over the coming years. Around 350,000 euros will be used to further develop the ‘Ginix’ X-ray microscope at the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg. A further 650,000 euros will go towards a joint project with the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble.
The Ginix X-ray microscope is operated by MBExC member Prof. Dr. Tim Salditt and Dr. Markus Osterhoff from the Institute for X-ray Physics at the Petra III synchrotron at DESY. Their project ‘Optics for full-field imaging at Petra III and IV’ is part of the preparations for a new X-ray microscope at the Petra IV X-ray light source, which is currently in the planning stage and has been classified as ‘of national importance’ by the BMFTR in the prioritisation process for extensive research infrastructures. Together with Dr. Sasa Bajt and Prof. Dr. Henry Chapman from DESY, the Göttingen scientists want to improve the focusing of X-rays in the nanometer range so that holographic and tomographic X-ray imaging at very high magnification becomes possible.
