X-ray view of neurodegenerative diseases

Researchers at the University and University Medical Center Göttingen, in collaboration with the Cluster of Excellence Multiscale Bioimaging and the Collaborative Research Center Mathematics of Experimentation, have found a new way to measure and quantify neuronal tissue architecture in three dimensions and at high resolution. Using their specialized X-ray imaging, the team led by MBExC members Prof. Dr. Tim Salditt and Prof. Dr. Christine Stadelmann-Nessler and first author Marina Eckermann was able to detect a previously unknown transition in neuronal nuclei in tissue samples that occurred in the hippocampus of Alzheimer’s patients, indicating altered activity of the neurons. The results are published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
